Celebrating its 10th anniversary, I am honored to be included again in the annual Hudson Valley Pottery Tour. (Jump to event info here.) This is my favorite event in the region. It's not just about browsing decorative pottery. The beautiful objects and the places and people that create them open a door to tangible ways of feeling something real and experience the world.

Clay, a material existing for millennia, reminds us that not everything meaningful is meant to be optimized or scaled. It can be one object in your hand made with such intention that it changes how you experience an ordinary moment. Thoughtful objects have a way of returning us to ourselves, asking us to slow down just enough to notice where we are and the serendipity that brought you here.

Looking back at last year's Tour I am reminded of my biggest takeaway: We show up for objects and we leave feeling carried, having seen so many creations made as a "vote for intentional living." Here is a snippet from last year's newsletter post-tour:

There are so many days where creating art feels like the last thing the world needs and considering the state of things, it was hard for everyone [the participating artists] to gauge how active the community would be in showing up and spending well-earned money. To our delight, the eventful weekend made the impact of art and meaningful objects especially tangible this year.

Craft is such a grounding, human language. Seeing so many people handle ceramic objects, turning them over in their hands, mumbling about where this object could go in your or a loved one's home, imagining the sea of these art objects traveling to those new homes, all felt like votes for intentional living, at a time when we fear apathy and complacency reins.

You showing up to experience the wide range of styles of work on the Tour, and responding to the variety of materials, processes, curiosities, and risks taken, showed us that these human things still matter.

All are invited to visit studios for free and meet artists and potters that have been working in ceramics for decades. The work and people are incredibly diverse and rich. Happening during the peak fall season, even just one studio is worth a trip.

I will be with my work in Stone Ridge at Bryan Czibesz's studio for the second year, along with 3 other artists including Bryan, Michael Humphreys, and Alexis Tellefsen. Light refreshments are available at all locations.
